Passport reissue applications can be made from within 1 year from the date of expiry and any time after expiry. Passport reissue is often confused with the term passport renewal, which is done only in special circumstances such as Short Validity Passports (SVP).

In case of passport reissue, the  new passport will be released while the old passport will be cancelled and returned. However, any of the active visas on the old passport will still be valid and can be used till expiry of the particular visa.

What is Passport Reissue?

The process of getting a new passport booklet when the current one has expired, is about to expire, is damaged, misplaced, or lacking blank visa pages is known as passport reissue. If personal information like name, address, or marital status needs to be updated, it is also necessary. Your citizenship and identity are unaffected, but you receive a new passport number.

    Passport Reissue in Special Cases

Customized documentation and perhaps extra clearances are required for special-case applications:

    • Address change only: Present the old passport and documentation of your new address; police confirmation might be necessary
    • Following a marriage or divorce, provide the marriage license, divorce decree, notarized affidavit, and proof of identity
    • Minor reaching adulthood: To acquire a complete 10-year passport, apply for renewal when the minor turns 18
    • If a passport is lost or destroyed, the PSK will seek a police report, an affidavit, and supporting documentation; expect more inspections
    • Applicants from overseas: Indian nationals living overseas should follow the reissue procedure at the appropriate Indian consulate.

Passport reissue is a common yet document-sensitive procedure that addresses expiration, damage, loss, or changes to personal information. Prepare the necessary paperwork ahead of time, select the appropriate application type on the Passport Seva portal, and give yourself enough time for any possible police verification.

    Passport Renewal

Passport renewal is done for Short Validity Passport (SVP). Renewals are not to be confused with Reissue, which deals with changes/re-issuance of passport under a wide range of circumstances as described in details in the next section.

For renewal of a Short Validity Passport (SVP), you need to submit Docs 1, 5 and 29. You have to make the application online and submit relevant proofs of urgency as required.

SVP passport is generally issued for people including students appearing for exams like SAT, TOEFL etc., non-delivery of passport due to loss in transit, Indians residing abroad who wish to travel to India, or if a criminal case is pending for the applicant in a court.

The validity of renewal of SVPs depends on the RPO/Assistant Passport Officer' discretion.

    Reasons for Passport Reissue

Reissuing a passport is typically requested by applicants for one of the following reasons:

    • The passport's validity period has ended
    • The booklet is unusable due to extensive damage (water, rip, or mutilation)
    • Theft or loss necessitates replacement
    • Name change brought on by marriage or judicial proceedings
    • Add a spouse's name or change one's home address
    • Additional visa papers are necessary due to frequent travel.
